Time for a new website?

Today our new website goes live - www.multiheat-energysystems.co.uk - this will be third website in six years & no doubt it will not be the last!

It's funny, we thought for a long time that our website looked the bees knees, customers told us so, they liked the ease of finding information & the simple layout, so why change?

Well, the main reason for changing is that we were unhappy with the shop. While we had 8 or so products to sell it was a simple enough shop but as we have added products, added accessories & have more to add during the upcoming heating season the shop started to look clunky!

So, the new shop can accommodate all these things, and we will be able to give voucher codes for discounts and all sorts of clever things!

So, sometime today our new website will go live - please go have a look at it and tell us what you think - much appreciated!

Everything needs electricity!

Well, not everything of course, but whether you use oil, gas or even biomass for your heating you still need electricity to make it work.

Again not strictly true as a wood burner or coal fireplace only needs human input to keep the fire going, but anything that you want to run automatically needs electricity. Most systems have a small computer inside them that makes the thing work and without electricity the computer bit doesn't work and so neither does your heating system.

So, if you pick an all electric heating system & there is a power cut, you are no worse off than your neighbour who uses either oil, gas or has a biomass system.

So, when considering a new heating system don't discount having an electric system!

Visiting our local agricultural show!

Today - always the last Monday in July depending on the weather - is the day of our local agricultural show. A day when the local farming community get to show off their animals, small businesses get to show off their wares, and everyone goes along to have a look.

The past three years we have taken our llamas with us, but not this year!

This year we are going as punters to see what every one else has to offer!

Pictures and details of what was there to follow!

Multiheat goes networking!

It is very easy when you work for yourself to become quite insulated from what else is going on out there in the real world. For me, that is the main reason I go business networking. To actually meet up with other business folk & to chat about - well - business things!

I'm not a great one for formal networking - you know, the stuff where you get up early for breakfast and have to do a 30 second elevator pitch as a way to introduce yourself to everyone around the table - apart from anything else, getting up to go out for breakfast is a problem as I have my "farm" role to do before work & breakfast tends to happen around 10am, and for another once you have introduced yourself to everyone around the table, they have all made up there minds they don't want what you have to sell and don't talk to you anymore anyhow!

So, I go out to lunch once a month with the North Devon Business Alliance - nearly always the last Friday of each month (December is the normal exception for obvious reasons) - where we have an informal gathering of chatting to everyone who turns up, sometimes there are only 6 or so of us, other times nearly 20, sit down for a nice lunch, swap stories, swap business cards as appropriate, more chatting after lunch and then home!

I find it a very good way to unwind from the pressures of being on my own most of the working month, and very occasionally I even get some business from it too!

Do you go networking, if so, what do you aim to get out of it?

Today's blog is just a load of old nonsense!

Do you get days where you are not inspired to write anything!

I set myself one of those SMART goals back along to write just one blog here on Blogger every work day - that is Monday to Friday here in North Devon. SMART goals you ask? This is how I think it goes:-

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time based
Well you cannot get more specific than doing a blog every workday, it's measurable because if I miss a day everyone will notice. It's achievable because so far I am doing it, I think it's realistic because as long as I have an idea in my head it doesn't take long, and of course it is time-based. Mmmmm, that's probably where I have gone wrong as it could be never ending!

How does all this fit into Multiheat & infrared heating? Good question, but it is all about numbers - the more people who read my blog, the more people who will check out my website - HERE - and hopefully, in the long run the more people will buy the product!

The occasional non-product specific blog like this one is all about giving you an idea of me the person and people buy from people - or is all of this just a load of old nonsense?

Here's to being more inspired tomorrow!

Renewable heat incentives!

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is the world’s first long-term financial support programme for renewable heat.

The UK government launched the RHI in November 2011 with a scheme for the non-domestic sector that provides payments to industry, businesses and public sector organisations. They have now set out plans for providing longer term support for homeowners - full details can be found on the government website HERE!

The payment tariff is as follows:-

  • Air source heat pumps - 7.3p/kWh
  • Ground source heat pumps - 18.8p/kWh
  • Biomass boilers - 12.2p/kWh
  • Solar thermal panels - at least 19.2p/kWh
This is good news for home owners who invested in any of the above since 15th July 2009 or are thinking of investing going forward! The scheme will start in spring 2014.

I have had a biomass boiler installed this summer so that is good news for me at least! I'd be interested to know if anyone else is thinking or has had installed any of these systems.

Tuesday is my most productive day!

Well, most weeks anyway!

Mondays tend to be a bit of a catchup from the weekend - plenty of emails from prospective customers, plenty of tweets, facebook and other social media interactions to deal with, brochure requests to respond to. I also have plenty of weekly routines to deal with to get me set up for the week. On Mondays I also have a work colleague in the office for most of the day, they have the same agenda as me & so we have plenty of interaction or should that say, I get plenty of interruptions! I get plenty done on a Monday but it is just bits and pieces.

On a Tuesday though - I have the office to myself, I don't have a large backlog of items that need dealing with & after clearing my desk I have most of the day to get on with projects that I want to - I like the quiet (living in the country it is the country sounds I can hear & of course the bleating of my goats just outside the office door) and can get plenty done without interruptions.

Wednesdays & Fridays I have a work colleague sharing the office - Wednesdays is a good day to have brainstorming sessions - in the mood to thrash out my Tuesday project thoughts (the day often gives rise to new ideas) - most are trashed but some get put on the agenda for later!

Fridays is POETS day - I always look forward to finishing around 3pm - I never do, but it is good to try each week - always seems to be a manic day, driven by clients wanting things done before the week is out!

I've missed out Thursdays - that day tends to be a bit of a nothing day, although there are times when we can turn Thursday into another Tuesday, but that is rare & depends on the workload at the time!

So, today being Tuesday, I am being productive - what is your most productive day?

You need how much power to run an infrared heating panel?

To heat a standard sized room you would need a 3Kw economy storage heater - this heater would fill itself up with heat overnight using a cheaper tariff of electricity and release the heat at a time to suit you.

Most people want a room to be heated in the evening and want about 4 hours of heat.

This 3Kw heater would use 3 units of cheap electricity per hour at the cheaper tariff of say 8 pence. Let us assume that it takes three hours to be fully charged you use a total of 9 units of electricity at a total cost of 72 pence.

An infrared heating panel of 850 watts (like the one in the picture above) would heat a similar sized room but would use your peak tariff to provide the heating. Let us assume that the panel would need to be on for 5 hours to ensure that the room was up to a nice temperature for your 4 hour session in front of the TV - say, electricity costs 13 pence per unit on your more expensive tariff and so assuming the panel is on full blast (which it won't be) it will cost just 55 pence to provide the same warmth!

That is nearly a 25% saving on your fuel bills!

In reality you would control the temperature in the room with a thermostat and so the panel will not be on full blast for the whole period and so the savings can be considerably more!

How does that sound?

Multiheat are specialists in infrared heating panels!

Note: the cost of electricity is an estimate and it will depend on your own tariffs as to what the actual cost will be and also will depend on how you use the room and the level of temperature that you feel most comfortable with! All these variables will impact on actual savings and the above example is only a guide!

An energy efficient heating solution to help reduce your fuel bills.

Infrared heating panels offer an energy efficient solution to heating your home!

Why? Well firstly infrared heats the objects & people in the room directly rather than heating the air directly! The objects in the room include the floor, the walls, the furniture etc... and as these items absorb the heat given off by the infrared heating panel they start to radiate that warmth back into the room.

Some law of physics state that after a time all things in the room will reach the same temperature, so the air will warm up giving you a nice all round warmth in the room.

Compare this with a traditional convection heating system - the air is warmed up first - warm air rises cooler air falls and is heated up creating a movement of air in the room. It is the warm air that then heats you up!

Yes, both systems heat you up quite nicely but the energy required to produce the same result is very different. You can reduce your energy requirements by as much as a third, if not more, by using infrared heating panels!

In my next blog I'll try and explain why!

Infrared Heating Panels - what are they?

Infrared radiation is a natural phenomena that is all around us - from the infrared given off by the sun where it can make us feel warm even on cold days to ....well us - we radiate out infrared which is why police helicopters can find you in the dark with their infrared cameras - it's not the cameras radiating infrared but detecting it!

With the wonders of modern day science we can now radiate infrared through infrared heating panels! The above picture shows the three main sizes (120cm, 90cm & 60cm * 60cm) & the three main colours (black, white & mirror)! They all function the same way - a special formula sits between the glass & the aluminium frame and when it gets hot it radiates out infrared on the glass side & it is the infrared that makes you feel warm!

Sounds simple & it is - check out our website for more information!

You have to be in it to win it!

Competitions - well if you do not enter then you won't win will you?

There are so many competitions going on out there that it would be a full time job to enter them all. In fact I believe that there are people out there who do exactly that - all power to you, I certainly couldn't!

We run competitions to get the word out there about our products - far infrared heating panels don't you know - from little £5 prizes on Facebook, to giving a full panel away on the Real Homes website (we will be having our next one towards the end of September) and we do this as it gathers more likes on our facebook page and/or adds new people to our mailing list, and it even makes people want to buy the product which after all is what it is all about!

Our latest Facebook competition is underway HERE and you could win a £10 Amazon voucher just by liking and commenting on our photo!

Do you run competitions & if you do, are they a successful way of promoting your business?

How to make home made air conditioning!

In this fine weather it is easy to get the fan out and move the breeze around the room but in the end it isn't cooling the room, all you are doing is moving the warm air around. It might make you feel a bit better but you aren't getting any cooler!

Now, this isn't my idea, believe it or not it was my accountants idea, but a good enough one to share!

Get a two litre fizzy drink bottle - empty of course - and fill with water - do not overfill, allow room for the water to expand as it will when you put it in the freezer. Yes, indeed, put it in the freezer and allow the water to freeze, or nearly freeze if you get impatient.

Place the bottle in front of your fan and the air will cool as it is blown past the bottle and provide you with cooler air. Have a second bottle in the freezer ready for when the first one defrosts!

Simple!

Infrared has been around for a long time!

Well forever really, but....

Infrared radiation was discovered as long ago as 1800, when an English astronomer discovered the existence of infrared energy beyond the red end of the visible light spectrum. He found that when sunlight was passed through a glass prism it formed a spectrum, if a thermometer was then moved along the spectrum of colours the heating effect could be monitored, moving the thermometer beyond the red end of the spectrum where no light was visible the heating effect increased.

This new region of the electromagnetic spectrum was called the infrared.

Impact of buildings on the environment - EPC gives you this too!

Following on from yesterdays blog about EPC there is also a section on the impact of buildings on the environment!

One of the biggest contributors to global warming (climate change) is carbon dioxide. The energy we use for heating, lighting and power in homes produces over a quarter of the UK carbon emissions.

The average household causes about 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

3 years ago my house was at 45 points in band E (39 to 54 points) with a potential to improve to 64 points and band D (55 to 68 points) and with the latest addition to my house we have actually managed to get to 92 points which gets me in band A (92 plus points) - just!

What have I had done - I have had a biomass boiler put in that replaces my oil fired Rayburn!

What can you do to improve your impact on the environment!

What is an EPC certificate?

The obvious answer is that it is an Energy Performance Certificate.

But what does it actually do? I'm not sure! On the form it says:-

Use this document to:-
  • Compare current ratings of properties to see which properties are more energy efficient
  • Find out how you can save energy and money by installing improvement measures
I have just had mine done and have scored 52 points with a potential to rise to 66 points so my property is rated E (band 39-54) and could get into a D (band 55-68) and the top actions I can take to save money and make my home more efficient are:-

  • Increase loft insulation to 270mm at an indicative cost of £100-£350 and gain 2 points
  • Solar water heating at an indicative cost of £4000-£6000 and gain 3 points
  • Solar photovoltaic panels (2.5 kWp) at an indicative cost of £9000-£14000 and gain 6 points
  • Wind turbine at an indicative cost of £1500-£4000 and gain 3 points
These recommendations are all well and good but the only realistic one is to increase loft insulation but gaining 2 points still leaves me in band E and at an estimated saving of £74 per annum and assuming maximum cost there is a 5 year payback and joy of joys I could borrow money through the Green Deal at an exorbitant rate of 7%!

The other options, my house points the wrong way to benefit from anything solar - my roof is east/west facing and I only get the afternoon sun and then only in summer, and with a smallish garden I don't have any where to put a wind turbine unless I put one in with my llamas and dog lots of trenches which add to the cost quite significantly.

Not sure any of this will actually make my house more sellable anyway!

What do you think?

When did they last take your meter reading?

I have just had my annual electricity bill - they didn't take a meter reading last year & they haven't taken a meter reading this year - they have taken a bit of a guess at it!

If I remember rightly, last year the guess was pretty accurate, I suspect because the quarter before the end of the year they did actually take a meter reading, but not having taken one since this years guess is hopelessly out - nearly £300 out!

I tried to enter a meter reading online, and they obviously don't believe it as it was rejected, and I now await someone to contact me, probably to arrange someone to come and take a meter reading! It does mean that I will take a bit more seriously the request to take meter readings regularly throughout the year so that the bill becomes a bit more accurate!

Now, what should I spend that £300 on?

How many times a day do you boil your kettle?

More to the point do you boil too much water in your kettle when you do?

A big outflow of tweets yesterday in my timeline (you can find me on Twitter HERE) about the number of times that you boil the kettle each day and whether you only boil enough water for your needs or whether you always fill the kettle regardless!

Some £68 million pounds worth of energy is wasted each year by kettles boiling unneeded water (according to some news website I read yesterday)!

I boil a kettle for 3 to 4 times a day for my allotted cups of tea - always add a little extra water, but not too much - and at weekends I might have one more! A sort of treat!

Are you wasting money by boiling too much water - is it second nature always to fill up the kettle regardless?

Is Summer finally here?

Actually no it isn't - here we are waiting patiently for those natural infrared rays to appear, warm us up and dry things out - but we are still living in a cloud, a light fog, a mist, a mizzle or whatever you want to call it, it is still wet & miserable!

I am assured that it will turn up some time this afternoon - the sun that is - and we can be forever hopeful!

In the meantime there are plenty of brochure requests to deal with, a quote to get out as well sorting out the dreaded VAT return!

Enjoy the sun when it comes out & watch out for the nasty ultra violet rays - they're the ones that do the damage!

I learned something new yesterday!

Well, they say you learn something new everyday but yesterday I learned why my iPhone battery loses power so quickly when I am off travelling away from home.

Apparently it's all the "Apps" wanted to push and pull notifications and to access the internet constantly. I was shown how to disable the Apps & I was amazed at how many are open doing stuff that I haven't used for ages!

Time for a clean out methinks!

Do you take a dog to work with you?

These two little pups are play fighting in the office while I try & concentrate on getting on with work.

I normally have just the one - Lladdie (the one on the right) - and he is very good at reminding me every 40 minutes or so that we need a break for 5 minutes so that we can concentrate so much better when we return!

Today is one of those days where concentration is required as I have so much to get through - including writing this blog - and people awaiting for responses!

In the meantime have you checked out the new "Request Free Brochure" button on our website?
