Sometimes we just don't get the sun!

Seems that vast swathes of the UK were enjoying the sun today!

Apart from North Devon where we had a cloudy day interspersed with low clouds & drizzle!

Still, it is Sunday & we managed to get grass cut & a bunch of other gardening jobs done!

The brain feels suitably refreshed ready for a very busy week starting starting tomorrow!

Do you allow yourself to recharge your batteries at the weekend or do you work seven days a week?

Interaction - just got to find the time for it!

I was at a great meeting yesterday where we were discussing getting more followers on Twitter - no I don't want to buy them, I want people to follow me because they really do want to!

Interaction is the key I was told - a colleague in the meeting gets 10+ new followers per day because he takes the time to interact with people, and other people like that and so will follow!

It's all about finding the time isn't it - I'm over on  Twitter as @infraredheating - and it would be great if you followed me! I am happy to answer your questions about our infrared panel heaters on Twitter, here on this blog or indeed over at Facebook !

Just ask!

A power cut!

Over the weekend we had a power cut - 3 or 4 to be precise & for a good 20 minutes we seem to be on reduced power - certain things would work (TV, telephone for example) but most things didn't (cooker, fridge, freezer & boiler) and it made me realise just how much we depend on electricity!

Even gas, oil burners and even our new biomass boiler won't work if we have no electricity.

The controls are all run by electricity and if the controls go off then so do the boilers.

Our neighbours who have solar PV panels were in a better situation as they have a 4Kw array of panels and as the power cut was during the day they could call on their own electricity but 4Kw isn't actually that much (a kettle is normally 2.5-3kw by itself). And to state the obvious if the power cut had happened after dark they wouldn't have that power either!

Oh, well at least it was summer & we didn't need the heating on!

A testimonial!

This panel has been in situ now for two years and provides plenty of warmth to this cold north facing room in an old period house. The radiator was hidden behind the sofa and just not big enough to warm the room, it is now turned off! A programmer ensures the heating comes on and off just the same as central heating, but provides greater flexibility to save energy when the room is not in use, an override button also means the heating can easily be turned on for chilly summer evenings too! The family love the feel of infrared warmth.

Wasted energy due to lack of control!

Any heating system can waste a considerable amount of energy by not being controlled properly or efficiently!

For example if you set a thermostat to heat your house to 22 degrees Centigrade but have to open a window because the house gets too hot, then by turning the thermostat down just one degree can save you money and effort in having to open the window.

Another example is to have the timer turn the heating off as you leave for work each morning. By turning the heating off half an hour before you leave home will again save you loads, and the house will hold the heat for that long so you are not going to get cold!

What can you do to save money and energy?

The longest day!

Today is the longest day!

It isn't really as every day is 24 hours, but in the Northern Hemisphere today is the day where we get the maximum amount of daylight! I was going to say sunshine, but here in North Devon it is a gloomy overcast sort of day!

However, we get natural infrared in nature.

When infrared rays touch a surface they will cause it to heat up, the most common example of this is sitting in the sun. The suns infrared rays will provide healthy warmth on the skin irrelevant of the outside temperature, you may even be enjoying the sunshine whilst in the snow on a skiing holiday.

A warm sunny wall is also the result of the suns infrared rays this time heating the stonework which in turn radiates the heat back.

Every object that is warmed will radiate some electromagnetic heat radiation back, the intensity of the radiation increases as the vibration of the atoms in the object increases.

What can you do to brighten up a gloomy old day?

Here in North Devon yesterday we were basking in sunshine and the temperatures were well in the the 20 degrees C, and here we are today in a sort of gloom. There is no wind, no rain and no sun, just plenty of cloud cover!

Actually a good day to be getting on with things both indoors & outdoors, but being a working day we are here inside the office wading through our ToDo box and getting things done!

In the midst of all this I have just put 7 eggs into our little incubator - hens eggs - six Copper Black Maran eggs to be precise plus one from my own flock of cross breeds to fill the incubator up!

Getting egg-cited now but will have to be patient for 21 days!

In the Multiheat world we have shipped out 3 of our white glass infrared heating panels to a customer in Sussex who is doing a complete refurbishment and replacing the central heating with infrared panels. He has already installed 3, and has 4 more on back order and will be using 6 controllers to completely zone his house for maximum efficiency.

Are you doing a complete refurbishment? Why not consider our infrared heating panels for your project? Check out our website HERE for more details!

A weekend of DIY

The bathroom mirror has been replaced!

Above the sink in the bathroom we had a mirror with a glass shelf underneath it & for me it was always a nuisance when shaving because the mirror steamed up & I couldn't see my face without wiping the mirror first!

Last week we had the mirror replaced with a 400w Multiheat Mirror Infrared Panel Heater and so shaving in a steamed up mirror is a thing of the past! These last few days have been quite autumnal in North Devon, so having the heater on took the chill off the bathroom as well - a double result!

DIY came in to play only with putting up a new glass shelf to go under the mirror as I still needed somewhere to put my toothbrush!

The panel itself was installed by a local electrical contractor and the controls are outside the bathroom looking very smart - we used an AUBE 232 programmer giving us independent control of the panel which gives us a 5/2 day control with 4 time setting points!

Rain stops play!

The weekend is here & like most people during June I like to get outside and get on with some outside chores. Lo and beyond it has started raining, not a nice gentle summer shower, but an autumnal heavy downburst!

Luckily I did manage to cut a bit of grass last night, but hopes of building a raised bed in the veg plot & getting my courgettes planted appears to be a job for another weekend!

So, what to do! I don't feel motivated to do any work in the office & the house still has electricians strutting their stuff, so am not enthused to do much at all!

What do you get up to when rain stops play?

BTW you can follow me on twitter at http:\\twitter.com/llamakevin to find out what I get up to!

Infrared on Facebook?

Checking to see whether we feature on facebook at all when searching Google we are no where to be seen. Interestingly infrared is associated with music and films and producers and the like, it is a long way before you find any mention of infrared heating on facebook!

Of course, our page on facebook is named after our company - Multiheat - as is this blog, whilst on Twitter we are better known as Infraredheating on Twitter!

Thereby lies a problem, for us and I am sure for many others, getting your key words right is as important on Twitter & Facebook as they are for Google - at least if you want Google to find you there!

What the frack?

Fracking is the new kid on the block - what is it?

According to Wikipedia it is "Hydraulic fracturing is the fracturing of various rock layers by a pressurized liquid."!

Today I spotted on the Telegraph website the following headline "Fracking will mean lower energy bills, Cuadrilla vows"

What it means is that they have found a supply of gas that has not been considered viable to extract before that can now be mined (if that is the right word) and introduced to the market to keep the supply of gas going for a lot longer than originally thought, and in the short term it will mean lower prices for gas! There will be a wait until 2016 but it has to be good news for consumers who are already hooked into gas for central heating boilers and for cooking!

However, that shouldn't stop people from continuing to look for efficient electric solutions, and with the continuing support for solar and wind farms to produce electricity, electricity will remain a competitive alternative!

Check out infrared facts on our website HERE! A different alternative!

Upheaval - who needs it?

One of the downsides of improving the energy efficiency of your home is the upheaval - we are having a biomass boiler installed along with a few of our own infrared panel heaters!

Today it is the electricians turn to cause havoc! Not really, but it is best to keep out of the way as floor boards are pulled up to lay new cables for the installation of the panels - always best to have it done professionally and in any event we need to ensure we get the appropriate certificates to show potential buyers of our home that the work was done according to the latest regulations! Not that we are planning to move any time soon, but nevertheless best to get the paperwork sorted now!

We are having a few zone panels put in - one in the kitchen which is our main living space, one in the bathroom (a nice mirror one there) and one in the spare bedroom/office - all of these panels will operate separately and not in conjunction with the central heating but will enable us to heat a single room without turning the main boiler on which will heat the whole house.

This should save us quite a bit of money over a year particularly as we work from home and these chilly June days - yes June days, like October out there it is today - when we could do with a little bit of warming up, we do not want to put the central heating on!

Check out our website HERE for more information on how to use infrared panels in your home!

Energy costs - forever on the up?

Real increases in typical gas bills to 2020 are forecast to be 12%, while real electricity bills are forecast to be 8% lower than in 2011. In 2020 the full range of policies is projected to add 1% to a typical gas bill (compared to a situation with no policy) and cut electricity bills by 16%

The above was taken from a report written by DECC in November last year - a full blog on this point can be seen on our website HERE - but it clearly shows that electricity prices should be going down compared to gas!

Electricity will soon be the power choice for energy efficient home!

We all talk about the weather, don't we?

I have just posted a blog on how weather can affect your work motivation over at Devon Social Media - here -Does the weather affect your work motivation? and for one I work better when it is dry, not too hot, and obviously not too cold!

What do you do when you work from home though, and it does get a bit chilly, today the temperature is going to struggle to get up to 14C, not a comfortable warmth to sit down and watch TV, or do some work at the computer. Even a jumper doesn't quite cut it - fine for when you are moving around, but not when you are sitting still!

No... you don't want to put the central heating on, lighting a fire seems a bit over the top.. yes, let's just get that fan heater on, that'll warm you up! It will warm you up, that is true, but still an expensive way to to do it. a 2 Kilowatt heater can cost as much as 25p an hour, £2 if you keep it blowing for 8 hours, a lot of money.

Consider an infrared heater - here is a great testimonial - “I absolutely love my panel. It’s near my desk so is brilliant for those cold early mornings. It feels like I’m abroad and gets me to a perfect temperature quickly without making the room uncomfortable with hot air. When I’m working with others they always comment on how great it feels. The radiator is on just to keep it ticking over. Definitely planning on expanding my collection. Thank you.” N - a 350w panel can keep you and your desk area warm & the cost of running this panel will cost just 35 pence to run for 8 hours!

A tad less expensive than that 2Kw fan heater!
