When INFRAPOWER introduced a completely new technology for our infrared heating panels, they revolutionised the efficiency of infrared heating panels.

They have continued to research and test, and they have done this in many different environments, and in many different application scenarios, both in Asia and in Europe.

These results combined with independent German data led to further development of the already high efficient infrared heating panels.

Infrapower have worked with Austrian/German technicians and a well known Austrian laboratory to continue to improve, test and compare their infrared panels against some well known competitors. The results have shown that Infrapower infrared panels perform 18% better than the best European manufactured models.

Together with a Japanese supplier Infrapower have found a solution to combine the highest grade carbon with the newest conductor technology in the market. This technology provides the following advantages:-

• high surface temperature with lowest possible consumption
• equal surface temperature on the total surface
• highest possible output of infrared
• safe and very durable

Principle of solar radiation!

Our infrared heaters use the principle of solar radiation providing a comforting warmth to every room.

A specially developed carbon fibre material transforms electricity into long-wave infrared-C radiation. This radiation does not need air to transport the warmth but permeates it with minimum loss and warms up whatever it comes into contact with, in the case of a room, the walls, the floor and the furniture in it!

These then store the heat and release it back evenly into the room.

The natural infrared from the sun overcomes  a vast distance to travel here  to Earth and you can feel that warmth on a sunny day, even in the winter.

Infrared heating in the home!

Why would you want infrared heating in the home?

One of the main considerations when installing domestic heating is the appearance of the heaters and the space that they occupy.

Fortunately, infrared heating panels are flat, unobtrusive, and are supplied in a number of materials, finishes and colours to compliment most types of room and decor.

These range from plain white carbon fibre, which is slightly matt and non-reflective and makes it ideal for fitting to the ceiling,

to stunning glass panels which reflect light and movement.

Heating mirrors are also available and are a bonus to any bathroom, as they do not mist up, and cast a gentle warmth across the room.

Picture panels are also available to conceal heaters under any sort of picture to suit your tastes. Pictures cannot be changed so ensure that you choose an image you will happily live with for years.

Infrared heating panels are also ideal for heating a garden room/office or as a single heater in a spare bedroom/office.

Near, medium and far infrared - what's the difference?

Near, medium and far infrared - what's the difference?

The infrared part of the spectrum lies right next door to the red end of the visible light spectrum and comes just before the "microwaves"!

Infrared can be divided into three categories, near, medium and far!

We know that some infrared heaters glow orange/red and these heaters are generating energy from the "near "infrared part of the spectrum. In terms of measurement this is between 0.75 and 1.4 microns closest to the red visible light. Night vision devices would also use this area of infrared.

Short wavelength infrared is measured between 1.4 and 3.0 microns and is used for long distance telecommunications.

Medium infrared and far infrared do not give off any light at all and can be measured 3.0 microns and above. Heating panels generally fall in the 5.6 to 10.0 micron range.

The more dangerous microwaves are measured at over 1,000 microns and are a long way off the range that infrared heaters use.

Very simply, infrared is part of the light spectrum!

In the 1800's Sir Frederick William Herschel discovered that an area of the light spectrum produced heat. He directed light through a glass prism to create a spectrum  and measured the temperature of each colour. He found that the temperature increased from the violet to the red end of the spectrum.

He continued to measure the temperature beyond the red end of the spectrum in a region where no light was visible and found that this area had the greatest temperature of all. This area has become known as the infrared part of the spectrum.

The warmth given off by the sun and why we feel warm when standing in the sun is because of this infrared energy.

The heating season comes to an end!

Of course that doesn't mean people stop buying heaters, it just means most people have other things on their mind. The weather forecast this week would tend to point people into going out to buy BBQ's. Unfortunately we don't sell BBQ's, we sell heaters.

We do have a special offer on at the moment - our 400w Mirror Heater - reduced from £359.99 down to £225.00, both prices including VAT & delivery. We have four in stock and when they are gone, they are gone. This is correct at time of posting - 13th April 2015!

Hanging panels - landscape or portrait?

I was asked by a customer earlier this week whether our infrared panels need to be hung landscape, or could they actually be hung portrait.

To be honest most of our sales pictures nearly always show them being hung landscape, but there is no reason why they can't be hung the other way.

As can be seen in the above picture sent in by another customer, they do fit neatly when hung portrait!

Infrared panels with feet make a great portable heater!

Infrared heating panels are best positioned high on a wall or even in the ceiling to get best use out of them, but by adding a set of feet you can also turn them into very useful portable heaters.

That way you can have the panel beside your favourite chair, or positioned in that cold spot in a room that you can never get warm.

We have a customer who uses their panel in the utility room, it's also where he has his office, and in the cooler months the room can get very cold. The 350w panel, on feet, positioned next to his chair is enough heat to keep him nice and warm.

350w is a lot less power than using a 1-2Kw fan heater that many people use to do the same thing!

Infrared heaters for heating your pets!

Actually, infrared heating is a good way to keep your pets warm, although you probably do not need as much power, as most animals don't like to be too warm for too long.

Mind you our dogs love to lie directly in front of the wood burner in our living room!

The infrared gives off a nice gentle heat, unlike the wood burner, and will provide heat in utility rooms, outside runs, shed hotels (oh yes, we have had one of our infrared heating panels installed in an outside shed where guinea pigs, mice, rats as well as rabbits all live whilst their owners go away on holiday).

If you don't already know, we breed our own pygmy goats and our infrared panels are good at providing an extra bit of warmth for new born kids.

This is mum to be Breeze (due in February).

So, if you do need a bit of extra heat for your pets a small 300w infrared heating panel situated above their bed will be ideal.

Infrared heating panels are nothing much to look at!

Our infrared panels aren't anything to look at really.

A functional design, flat (just 25mm deep) and rectangular (here we can see a 600mm * 900mm and a 600mm * 1200mm). The smaller panel uses just 600w of power and the larger panel just 850w of power.

Designed to be fitted on the wall or the ceiling (ceiling will give maximum effect) and hard wired into a controller (timer and/or thermostat) or a fused spur.

Fixing an infrared panel to the wall!

All of our infrared heating panels come with fixing kits!

The back of each panel looks like the picture above (this one is a 60cm * 60cm panel).

Inside the box is a template for ease of determining where the holes go on the wall or ceiling!

The fixings provided assume that the panel will be fixed to brick or concrete, so if you are fixing to plasterboard, or a hollow wall, or some other surface then you MUST ensure that you buy the appropriate fixings. These will be available from most reputable DIY stores.

Drill the holes, tap in the fixings, screw into the fixing the screw as supplied or as recommended by the fixing type chosen by you, ensuring that the spacers as supplied are fixed (these ensure that there is a slight gap behind the panel to allow for air circulation) to the panel.

The four crosses on the back of the panel should be presented to the four screws and slid sideways by a few millimeters to fix to the wall or ceiling!

This heating panel can warm a small room of around 5 square metres very effectively and efficiently.
This small standing infrared heater with feet will cost around 5 pence per hour to run.

Comparison – 1KW electric portable heater costing £40 in use for 5 hours a day for 200 days a year will have an annual running cost of £130 per year. This 350 watt heating panel costing £224.98 in use for 5 hours a day for 200 days will have a running cost of just £50 per year. After two years they will have cost almost the same, but this small standing infrared heater panel will continue saving money for many years as it has a long lifespan.

Pictures on infrared heating panels - a good idea?

As a company we do not sell infrared panels with pictures on.

Our market research shows that peoples taste in artwork changes, and having to change a heater every time you fancy a change in decor is a little expensive. As the best place to put an infrared heater is on the ceiling, you can have a standard panel on the ceiling for 20+ years and change your picture every six months if you want to, without having to re-wire in a new heater.

We think that makes sense!

On a cold and frosty morning!

First frost of the year here in North Devon, my first thought was, darn, did I remember to leave my heater on in the office?

My office is a wooden building with a tin roof, the insulation isn't the best as it was built as a workshop/barn and in fact in the larger part it is still used as a barn to house some of the farms pygmy goats. In the summer when the sun shines on the tin roof we can get inside temperatures of 35+ degrees C and in the winter when it's freezing outside it's freezing inside if I don't remember to leave my heater on!

My side of the workshop is about 7m * 5m - a whopping 35 square metres of uninsulated space that needs heating!

Thank goodness for our infrared heaters - we use a 600w heater that sits above two desks and this is enough to stop the office from freezing and on milder winter days is enough to keep the two of us warm.

When it gets really cold, we turn an old 1200w heater on to give the place a bit of a boost.

What did we do before our infrared heaters, we had a 2Kw storage heater and a 2Kw convector heater, and we were still cold.

So, we are warmer and have more than halved our heating costs!

50 watts per square metre

If I want to use infrared heaters to heat a room, how many watts do we need to heat that room?

The answer is in the title - 50 watts per square metre!

Of course this assumes that you have a standard height of ceiling (around 2.4 metres), that the room doesn't have too many windows or glass doors to the outside, and that the room/building is insulated to modern standards.

If you have an old house, or if you french doors to the outside, or if it is overly draughty, or if you have very high ceilings, you may well need to use 80 watts per square metre or even more.
