Over the weekend we had a power cut - 3 or 4 to be precise & for a good 20 minutes we seem to be on reduced power - certain things would work (TV, telephone for example) but most things didn't (cooker, fridge, freezer & boiler) and it made me realise just how much we depend on electricity!
Even gas, oil burners and even our new biomass boiler won't work if we have no electricity.
The controls are all run by electricity and if the controls go off then so do the boilers.
Our neighbours who have solar PV panels were in a better situation as they have a 4Kw array of panels and as the power cut was during the day they could call on their own electricity but 4Kw isn't actually that much (a kettle is normally 2.5-3kw by itself). And to state the obvious if the power cut had happened after dark they wouldn't have that power either!
Oh, well at least it was summer & we didn't need the heating on!
